Take the kids on an educational vacation this year and let them have fun while they learn important facts about American history. Fort Myers Florida is a town steeped in history. First discovered by the explorer Ponce de Leon and his followers Fort Meyers became a key military installation after settlers first began arriving in Florida in the 1800s. Fort Myers was built along the Caloosahatchee River as one of the first bases of operations in Florida during the Seminole Indian Wars. Fort Myers was named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers, the son-in-law of the commander of Fort Brooke in Tampa. Fort Meyers was abandoned in 1858 and reoccupied by United States Federal troops from 1863-1865. During the American Civil War, a skirmish between Northern and Southern troops occurred just across the river from the fort in 1865 and is reenacted annually at the North Fort Myers Cracker Festival. The actual Fort Meyers itself was disassembled, and some of the wood used in construction of some of the first buildings of the city of Fort Meyers. At the time, there were very few families that lived in Fort Meyers and it was essentially a military town but now millions of tourists come to Fort Meyers every year to enjoy the history of the town and it’s most famous resident, Thomas Edison. Edison had a summer home in Fort Meyers and the town is proud of its famous son. Visitors with families in tow can have a great time touring Edison’s summer home in Fort Meyers and learning about the many wonderful inventions that Edison gave to the world.
